Forestry and the Global Environment: Challenges of Managing and Conserving Forests in the 21st Century

Effective decisions about forests, forest products, and forestry need to be based on valid information and the most comprehensive understanding of this information at all scales - from the global to the local. Our understanding of forests and the information upon which this understanding is based has changed dramatically during the past few years.
This course has been designed to meet the needs both of busy executives with little background in forestry who find themselves in organizations involving forests and forest products as well as experienced forest managers who are stepping into positions which require a broad perspective of forests and their roles in the world economy. The mixture will allow individuals to learn from others’ lifetimes of experience in seeing issues from a different, sometimes opposing, viewpoint, and to broaden their own perspective on the problems of managing forestlands. The course covers both understanding forests, forestry, and forest products, and on building executive skills.
The course will be intensive and hands-on. Expect to work hard and have preconceptions challenged. Lectures will be supplemented with hands-on computer simulations, conducted as group exercises with technical assistance from Prof. Oliver and Yale graduate teaching assistants. Students will be expected to present their results to the class the next day. By the end of the week, participants will have the know-how to use landscape-modeling software to make decisions, and to present and explain the rationale for those decisions. Participants will gain information, material and access to global ideas and thinkers in an academic environment, and develop contacts with fellow participants, graduate students,Yale faculty, and other instructors, that can serve them well beyond the course.
Location: Courses take place in New Haven, Connecticut, on or near the historic Yale University campus during the academic year, allowing participants to be fully immersed in the academic atmosphere. Participants will be housed at the New Haven Omni Hotel, and vans will be available to transport them to class locations.
Schedule: Classes will be demanding and challenging. Daily class sessions will run 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with lunch and coffee breaks. After dinner, Monday through Wednesday evenings will be used for hands-on case study computer sessions, with technical assistance from Prof. Oliver and graduate teaching assistants. A field trip will take place on Thursday, for those without forestry experience, to view and discuss forests and soils. Thursday evening there will be a group dinner at one of New Haven’s fine restaurants.
Tuition: Tuition is $7,500 if reserved by February 28; $8,000 otherwise. Tuition includes hotel room, breakfast, lunch, coffee breaks and Thursday dinner, all course materials, textbooks and additional reference books by faculty. A limited number of subsidized slots are available for NGOs with prior arrangement.

Applicants for scholarships should provide an additional statement from their employers, commenting on the merits of the employee, the importance of the course to the individual and the organization, and justification of the need for a scholarship. Generally we ask that organizations provide half the cost of the tuition in order to attend.
